I wasn’t gonna post anything today; instead, I was just going to visit some of the 2,000+ entries that have piled up in my reader :/. Best thing I can do now is CLEAR it!
When I pulled up Heather’s blog, she had a link to Bono’s acceptance speech at the NAACP Awards. Trusting Heather’s judgment, I watched it. It’s easy to see why so many people love the man, not just his music.
A few of my favorite lines–
"True religion will not let us fall asleep in the comfort of our
freedom. “Love thy neighbor” is not a piece of advice, it’s a command.
And that means in the global village we’re going to have to start
loving a whole lot more people, that’s what that means.""Because where you live should not decide whether you live or whether you die…" (Regarding poverty)
"…whatever thoughts we have about God, who He is, or even if God exists, most will agree that God
has a special place for the poor. The poor are where God lives. God is
in the slums, in the cardboard boxes where the poor play house. God is
where the opportunity is lost and lives are shattered. God is with the
mother who has infected her child with a virus that will take both
their lives. God is under the rubble in the cries we hear during
wartime. God, my friends, is with the poor. And God is with us if we
are with them…This is not a burden, this is an adventure. Don’t let anyone tell you it cannot be done.
Preach it, brutha! If he ever leaves music, he’s got a great "fall-back" vocation waiting in the wings.
HT: Weekend Fisher for the written transcript.
The second quote you listed comes from U2’s song, Crumbs from Your Table. Excellent song.
Heather, I missed that…but I’ll listen with “new ears” next time…
Robin, I’ve been SO in love with Bono for so many years I’ve lost count… over 20 fer sure! Now I have even more reasons to love him.
I’m just trying to catch up on some blog reading here, holy cow I can’t seem to keep up with anything anymore! Gotta say I love your fortune cookie post… love the one about “accepting imperfections” especially if you add “in bed….” LOL.
Also, a big THANK YOU for your thoughtful response on my don’t-like-church post. Seriously girl, I never cry but your comment brought me close. More on this later, I think I will have to post about it again. Anyway, your thoughts were SO right on so thank you! You totally GET me… but you knew that, right?
And one more thing… I noticed you’re *blushing* over my dear sweet friend Mair these days. Okay, are you trying to kill me here? I can’t handle this intense level of jealousy… I really loved being your *blush* while it lasted.
Although I’ll admit, if I’m going to be upstaged by anyone, it might as well be Mair. She’s a darling. (And one of my IRL friends, if you can believe it.) So… eat your heart out babe, I actually own an original copy of her first book, and I am NOT giving it to you!
Have a great weekend. Happy Bono-dreaming….
Bono not only knows how to ROCK – but he is a deeply religious man too.
My internet keeps hanging on the video…grrrr….
But despite what some people might say (the dissenters out there…) I think it’s a great thing to use your fame to do some good. Bravo Bono!
one celebrity who walks the talk. (St Frances of Assisi knew the power of his preaching was in his walk)
Rachelle, OBVIOUSLY, I’m out of my bloggin’ routine…look how long it’s taking me to respond here :/.
Your post…yeah…seems like there’s more to be said…I know there was much more I wanted to say, but it definitely would be a better conversation than blog post exchange. I’ve lived a bit of what you were describing so maybe that’s how I was “close”… If you write more…I’ll read more ;).
Mair has the GREATEST COMMENT THREAD EVAH going, and I haven’t even been able to read it properly because we left early today and I’m not able to read right now…I think I need to though to respond to Steve if nothing else. You needn’t worry, love…I’m ambidextrous when it comes to my blushes…I juggle many at a time :).
She’s TALENTED and adorable and I can’t believe you have a first run copy! Do you think Steve will really pass his along??? Should I accept it????
Karmyn, it’s sad to me when we minimize people by thinking they can’t be “both” (successful in their careers and people of strong faith and conviction). That being said, the entertainment industry is SOOOoooo narcissistic, I guess it’s difficult to live your faith.
Claudia, I hope by now you’ve been able to see the clip…you’d like it, I think. And, yep, I agree with what you said…can you imagine having that much influence???
Pamela, that quote attributed to St. Francis is one of my favorites!
[Steve really will pass his copy along (he’s writing hidden messages in it this very minute).]
I aspire to live by that “hold loosely to the things of this world” philosophy, so giving you Mair’s book is easy. In fact, if you want my ’97 Dodge Neon, you can have that, too.
But should you accept the book? Might want to pass that one by your spiritual counselor. Or your therapist. Or mine.
Wow, wow, wow. So profound.
So good…so right
Steve, forget the Dodge Neon, you hoarding any chocolate? Coffee? Women’s shoes?
Okay, I hope the answer is “NO!” to #3. Good philosophy to live by….
That last line was just to scare me away, wasn’t it?
Jenny, I couldn’t agree more…even if your comment was slightly less than profound ;).
MJD, ummm huh!
Answers: No, No, None that I’m admitting to and Yes. (I hope I put those in the right order.) I’m sending the book to Mair this week.
Steve…tortured writer, and now a comedian. Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got a keeper….! 😉
