My family needs your help…this kitty needs your help!
First, though, the photo below is Friday’s 40-word-or-less Photo Challenge. Really, truly, does his impish face not compel you to write SOMETHING??? If you decide to play along (details by following the link if you’re new to Friday’s 40 PC), please register your post with Mr. Linky tomorrow.
Back to our dilemma: it’s not that he doesn’t have a name, exactly; it’s that he’s already had a dozen names and we can’t settle on one! Let’s go down the list: He came to us as "Duke" (are you kidding me? there’s not a "Duke" bone in his body!), and though we first named him "Nelson" (after the band Hawk Nelson), Rachel decided that wasn’t right for him either. We’ve tried:
- Pooh (he had a problem with noxious emissions when he was on Science Diet, since remedied)
- Tigger
- Rascal
- Rosco
- Tricksy
- Sparky
- Fred
- George
- Leroy
- Scamper
- Kat
…there are others, but my children aren’t home to remind me (our dull imagination when it comes to kitten-naming makes you pity us, huh?). He’s sweet & purr-y & playful, and every night he finds amusement in hunting, chasing, then playing with unsavory bugs to their dismembered demise (to date? crickets, grasshoppers, BIG, HONKIN’ SPIDERS, and cicadas) (there are still spider legs in my garage…).
So…ideas? Suggestions? At this point, everything we try is laughable. Surely, there is some great name we’ve overlooked.
I thank you in advance for your serious attention to this matter.
I’ve got to say, he looks like a Trouble to me. 🙂
Given his penchant for hunting the creepy crawlies, I vote for Spidey.
Personally, I think you nailed it when you call him an Imp. 😉 But Trouble is good, too. Or maybe Frisky. 😛
Speck. Because he has the black specks on his nose.
Skeeter. He looks like a Skeeter. And he looks like he would like to come home with me! : )
Not sure why, but Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was my first thought (even though he’s not a mongoose!). 😉
looks like a Caramel to me… but you could always go the Spiderman route and name him Toby.
he’s a cutie. Almost makes me long for a cat… almost.
Twitchet. He’s a Twitchet. Have you ever read Beatrix Potter? 🙂 Tabbatha Twitchet? 😉 We had one of those once, but he didn’t like living inside, and we were moving – so we gave him to a nice family that probably renamed him. Our kitties are Quaker (the goodest boy that we got on Thanksgiving week) and Minga (the evil snott – she’s stuck up, crybaby – she has an overactive tear duct).
We love cats. In case you couldn’t tell. My last cat was Pug. His lovely face is on my sidebar.
Mutt.
I’m all about the irony.
I’m stealing the Speck name and re-naming him Freckle (or Freckles). It has a little more attitude, which clearly a cat of yours must have!
I can’t believe you didn’t think of this one, what with your blog name and all…
He loves spiders, ergo, Hagrid.
I named my cat I had in college “Sukie” – after one of the lead ladies from John Updike’s Witches of Eastwick. Witches. Cats. Seemed appropriate at the time. LOL
In celebration of getting him in autumn and in reference to his orange color, name him Pumpkin. :0)
I was going to say Pumpkin too, because of the season, and he’s orange. Maybe Crookshanks, or Jack (like Crackerjack, or Jack-o-lantern).
We had an orange tabby with the same markings as your little guy. His name was, Socrates.
Oh I miss that little snooger.
I’m partial to people names for pets and he looks like an Eddy to me. He is a cutie, no matter what you call him.
Crookshanks? or Hank… or Albus?…I saw Socrates in the above comments. I like that one too!
I like the Harry Potter reference, so why not Harry?
How about Sneaker? Oh, wait. Are we talking about the cute kitty? 😉
Purrsnikitty

Dearest Auntie Robin,
When did y’all decide you were more than a one cat family? Clearly this has happened in the last….three months(?) that we haven’t see you Tennessee lovies.
He actually looks like our cat when he was a kitten, we named him Simba.
I left it up to my daughter, she said “butterscotch”. She like the color of his fur and she said he has beautiful eyes.
She also reads “Twilight” and said Jacob or Jasper would be a good name.
Jackson. He looks like a Jackson. 😉
I bet he’s ALL kinds of mischief. I so wish Iwant’ allergic to cats. I love them, would love to have one, but if I did, I would die from lack of air. 🙁
Punkin’
Marmalade
Morris(of course)
Kitty Tom
These are all orange cat names I have experienced in my life.
Rascal seemed to suit. Pepper?
We had the same problem and are still unsure of our choice of dog name. We call him Miki but half the family call him Milo. We made a choice today as we had to send in papers.
Have you tried any cat name sites? Or a baby name site that has the meaning you are trying to find?
Robin,
I really WANT to participate in 40 Friday…but I’m dead tired from life kinda stress and massive freelance deadlines. So, hopefully I can catch ya next week.
I say name the cat Boromir or Strider. Okay, J.R. Tolkien favoritism showing through, but still I’ve always thought Boromir would be a great pet name!
Well you can certainly borrow our 15 year old cat’s name. PITA – and it is an acronym. Yep, that’s right. It applies to all cats, so I’m sure it will work well for your personal fluffball;)
It’s my hubby’s 40th birthday today – anyone care to come over and wish him well???
What about Trigger (vs. Tigger)?
Or:
Sasquatch
Blue (because it’s so opposite his coloring)
Squash (thanks to his pretty orange color, and that he likes to hunt/squash small bugs)
Webster
He looks just like my precious kitty that passed away while I was in Denver. So I think the name Ginger would be perfect.
Reading the new comments… Punkin’ is good.
Of course… that was what my mom called me growing up, so I may be a little partial to that. — Now she’s mostly calls me Boo’ful (VERY southern for “beautiful,” ya know.) 🙂
How about Toonces? (Like SNLs driving cat) :D:D
Ooooh…a Spider-Lover,eh? My funny (dog) boy Bodie –the golden retriever/corgie mix–goes for spiders,too-AND flies and sadly (for him) bees! Anyway–in honor of The Spider: “Arana” —Spanish for Spider!
