Sadly I have been to 0 places in Europe! I’ve been to Thailand, China, Taiwan, and Brazil. Does that help? 😉
My husband has always spoken highly of a monastery he visited outside Brussels. He also loved all the sites in Italy way more than Paris. But he was a 20-year-old male, so there is that.
I loved Brussels – The Grand Platz (sp?) is one of the oldest places in. Europe, and it’s lovely. The ice creme style carts with dipped waffles are fun too 🙂
Soccer games are fun too. My favorite experience was we happened to be in Munich for the finals of the 2002 World Cup when Germany played Brazil. The game was in Korea, but the atmosphere was amazing…even though Germany lost by 2 goals. I would have loved the chance to see a game in person.
The tulip fields in the Netherlands are on my list too 🙂
And the train on the ferry in Copenhagen.
Like I’ve said before, I’m living vicariously through you while you’re on this adventure!!
My husband loved Belgium – especially Brussels and Brugge…..you have to see the Manneken Pis. Also – in Brugge they have the only Michealangelo statue that isn’t in Italy. Go see it!!!

The Brugge church that has the Michealangelo is called: Church of our Lady. (they are also known for their tapestrys)

As we speak, my daughter is in Paris! While I’ve never been there, it should be a must-see. Or in my case, a must-eat!
I was in Budapest for a short time 10 years ago, it was beautiful.
Europe isn’t really on my radar, but if I think about it… I want to go to the Netherlands, because I am about 1/4 Dutch; Ireland because I hear it’s beautiful; Copenhagen because I did a report on it in high school;
not very helpful, is it?!? 🙂
I commented before I read the comments… so funny that Netherlands and Copenhagen were on my list, too!!
I guess Salzburg is on your list already as it is quite near. Try to have coffee at the Café Tomaselli, a beautiful old place (you order coffee at the waiter, cake and pastry is brought to you on a giant tray by a lady whom you pay immediately and separately from the waiter). If you have lots of time, I would recommend the Hellbrunn alley, a beautiful walk to the cute Hellbrunn castle.
Did you consider Munich? If you have a weekend maybe, I would recommend going to the opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) or the Philharmonic Orchestra (Münchener Philharmoniker). These are institutions performing on a really great level. Besides, the opera house is really beautiful and a sight in itself. You could also watch a ballet there, should you like this more.
Should you need a break from shopping in Munich, take a little walk in the Hofgarten, with a visit of the Café Tambosi near Odeonsplatz afterwards. (unfortunately, like the Tomaselli, rather crowded!)
About 2 hours from Burghausen to the West, you find Augsburg, a town with lots of Renaissance buildings and a very serene and beautiful gothic cathedral. To me, it is like Firenze in Germany – in fact, they had some Italian architects there.
Another cute little German town would be Bamberg in Frankonia. Its about four hours from Burghausen, but really very pretty. And if you should be able to spend a weekend in northern Bavaria, I would recommend Würzburg (about 45 minutes from Bamberg) – great wine, great food, lots of beautiful baroque churches!
Please feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions regarding life in Germany! I spent a year in the States as a Rotary student, and everything was sooo different! If you feel the same way, just contact me!
Have wonderful winter days – today, we have lots of sun and the snow looks like diamonds.
Love, Martina
Don’t miss Lake Como, Italy – beautiful even to a fifth grader when I was there years ago! One of my most vivid memories is the blooming of poppies everywhere in Germany in June. Visit Lichtenstein just because it’s the smallest “country” in the world. Anywhere in Austria and Belgium – just because they are beautiful!
I highly recommend that you find an American Military cemetary and visit. We did Memorial Day at the cemetary in Luxemburg one year. It was quite an honor to pay respects to those who gave their lives to secure freedom.
Oh, yeah. Another one that was pretty doggone cool…we went to the Reformation Sunday (1st Sunday in November) services at the huge Lutheran church in Worms one year. I imagine that there are plenty of places that have big services, but for me, being a student of church history, to be in Worms where the famous Edict of Worms was issued…well that just had my geeky little heart going pitty-pat!!
I would love to go to Prague. And all of Italy.
Our family served on a missions trip in a little village in the middle of the Swiss Alps called Adelboden. If you want a true Swiss experience (they hold World Cup ski events there in the winter), I can tell you how to get there and give you the name of the Christian hotel where we stayed. It was absolutely AMAZING.
Zurich is a beautiful city that I spent only a few hours in, but would really like to get back to sometime. Switzerland is just gorgeous.
And, of course, the UK. I’ve spent a lot of time there (lots of posts on my blog about that) and could help you out with that. So beautiful!
I’ve been to Paris and was, sorry to say, underwhelmed. Not my favorite, but others just love it. As long as you’re there you should probably say you’ve seen it. 😉
no doubt – prague! coolest walking city lots interesting people – cannot wait to take my boys in a few years!
Blessings!
I found your blog through in-courage. As an American expat living in England your experience in Germany made me intrigued so I had to stop by. Love this post as we are going on a month trip to Munich, Lake Garda, Barcelona, and Nice in a couple weeks though I enjoyed the several other posts I also read. Of the places we have gone some of my favorites were: NW France from Normandy beach up to Honfleur, St Ives and Tintagel castle in Cornwall, England, Edinburgh (the whole town), Rome (colosseum, shops, gelato, family cart biking through villa borghese), Giants causeway and Malin head, Ireland–too name a few :). So many beautiful places to see in this amazing world God created for us!
Europe is simply wonderful. Too much to see and do in one lifetime. 🙂 I was able to teach in France for a school year, and it was quite the adventure! I agree that Brugge is a must see. One of the best trips for me was a small town in the French Alps, Annecy. Florence was my favorite in Italy. Here is a blog post I wrote about some unique secrets of what to do in Paris: http://beautifulforsuchatimeasthis.wordpress.com/2014/01/04/secrets-of-paris-oh-la-la/. I have another post about the main sites as well. Happy travels everyone!
