Ever since my venture into blogging, I’ve borne witness to "The 100 Things" others have blogged about themselves, usually leaving me feeling extraordinarily boring and somewhat defeated. I can barely eek out an "Eight Things About Me" without breaking into hives over the lack of interesting material…and then I read Carmi’s list and thought, "Y e a h…if I ever do one of those, THIS is how I wanna do it…". When he posted a second "100 Things", it was time to write one myself.
Revised ~ If you’re a new reader (or one who has just discovered my "100 Things"), I’d love to hear how we’re similar….and different! Even though I wrote this a looong time ago, these kind of things don’t change :).
- After taking ten years of ballet, I never learned how to "spot" well.
- In spite of taking ten years of ballet, when I participated as a teen in the local America’s Junior Miss pageant, I tapped (having taken less then half the years I studied ballet) to "Yankee Doodle Dandy"…on stairs. Yes…s.t.a.i.r.s.
- The choreography began with me standing on my head.
- I would pay an arm and a leg to have video footage of that dance (or ANY of my performances) now.
- One of my favorite sounds is laughter, especially my husband’s and children’s laughs when it’s a deep-down belly laugh.
- I love to laugh until I cry because something is really, REALLY funny.
- That doesn’t happen enough.
- "The Sting" is my all-time favorite movie and not just because of Newman and Redford.
- Although they’re v e r y easy on the eyes, and I think both have aged well, like fine wine :).
- I’ve found one of the downsides to blogging is I don’t read as many books.
- Reading more books is one of my New Year’s resolutions.
- I’m starting the year by reading one of my favorite blogger’s (Ragamuffin Diva) first published novel, Murder, Mayhem and a Fine Man.
- I begin recycling plastics and metal this year as a result of a former post and consequent comment thread with another blogmate of mine.
- I hope to add paper products and glass soon (it’s a matter of space).
- I’ve found once you begin recycling, you think about environmental stewardship a whole lot more…I get a little twitchy when I see people throwing cans and plastic bottles in trashcans :/.
- One of the best, unexpected results of recycling was meeting Al, the steward of the recycling center where I take our things. HE is an example of how a GOOD JOB should be done!**
- I think I could pick my children and husband out of a police line-up, blindfolded, by their scents alone.
- My favorite scent on a person is "freshly showered", regardless of the soap, lotion or deodorant they put on after.
- Dirty fingernails gross me out.
- Dirty, long toenails REALLY gross me out.
- I love the fact my faith is not stagnant.
- It blows my mind to think about the Trinity and eternity.
- I can’t think about either for very long.
- I love how Jesus lived the gospel, showing us how to love God and love others.
- This, in practice, is remarkably simple but paradoxically difficult.
- In spite of the fact I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was nine and she was just 38, lost my maternal grandmother to same when she was in her early 20s, and my sister is a TEN YEAR (WAHOO!) SURVIVOR, I do not live in fear of the disease coming after me.
- That doesn’t mean I think I’ve dodged a bullet, just that I refuse to allow it to force me into living a life of "What Ifs".
- However, when I forget something I think I should remember, I wonder if it’s early Lewy Bodies Disease or Alzheimer’s.
- I’ve seen the end-life of dementia face-to-face…and realized there’s a paradoxical mercy in car crashes and sudden heart attacks.
- I think I’m over-using derivatives of the word "paradox" in this list.
- Even though I have a pretty big chickenpox scar between my eyebrows, it’s been a part of my face so long, I don’t even see it anymore.
- It embarrassed me as a teen.
- I’m glad smallpox has been eradicated in this country and my kids didn’t have to receive vaccination against it.
- But I kinda like the scar on my arm from my own vaccine.
- I wish I had paid better attention in ALL my history classes. I can’t remember much of anything now, but I find it fascinating, and wish I had retained more :/.
- I’m geography impaired and have no sense of direction.
- I can’t read a compass. I mean, sure, I know they always point north but that doesn’t do me much good given #37.
- My favorite childhood stories were "The Velveteen Rabbit" and "The Gift of the Magi".
- The exchange between the Rabbit and the Skin Horse about "becoming real" is beautiful to me.
- It reminds me of my former job as marketing director of a retirement community…it was FULL of "real" people.
- I love my daughter’s version of the V.R…it’s a stuffed white Persian cat she received as a gift when she was two, still has, loved to shreds (and survived two stomach virus "sprinklings" and two subsequent "showers" in the washer)…and her friends used to make fun of it when she was older ("You STILL have Princess?!), but I tried to explain to her she was more beautiful than EVER because she was loved "real". I wonder if she remembers that.
- Recurring dream themes of mine used to be running away from someone who was chasing me, the ability to fly (sometimes in relation to the former), not being able to put my contacts in because they were too big for my eyes, and my teeth falling out.
- I rarely dream about any of the above now, but the last thing makes me wonder if I grind my teeth.
- I’m a strong swimmer and, although decades from being current, was a lifeguard.
- The hardest job I’ve ever had (besides being a mom) was nursery director for a large church.
- The first year and a half were wonderful (I felt like I made a difference). The last 2 1/2 years slowly robbed me of joy, and at times, left me judgmental, critical and self-righteous. That makes me go "Ugh" now….
- THAT was when I realized it was time to leave it behind.
- Good manners are VERY important to me.
- My kids’ first words were "Please" and "Thank You" not "DaDa" or "MaMa".
- Just kiddin’ (but those were among their first words) :).
- "Large things" in creation inspire me–the ocean, waterfalls,
mountains, thunderstorms–and perhaps more than anything else I can put
my hands on, speak to the imagination, creativity, power, grace, beauty
and generosity of God. - "Little things" in creation inspire me, too–ants working in a
colony, snowflakes, fireflies; they remind me that God’s interested in
the details and little things matter. - I think dreadlocks are more appealing on black men than white men;
braids are equally attractive for any woman who can pull off the look
(I don’t think I pulled it off very well, but it was fun). - If I’m the last one out of the bed, I can’t imagine not making it every morning.
- I have scoliosis, but never had to wear a brace.
- Tiramisu and crème brûlée are my favorite desserts, sharing equal billing.
- In part, because I like their texture…I don’t really chew or bite either, I squish ’em around with my tongue.
- Using my blow torch to caramelize sugar is a cheap thrill.
- I love caramel macchiatos breves (made with half and half) and I’m afraid they’re the #1 reason I’ve gained weight this year :/.
- Plus, my favorite salty snack is cashews, and they’re fattening. I so wanna believe they’re healthy nuts.
- It’s worth it to me to pay a premium for whole cashews, halves and pieces don’t taste as good ;).
- Moderating #s 10 & 11 does not factor into any New Year’s Resolutions I’ve considered.
- Ever since my watch battery died I’ve been using my cell phone to tell time.
- I have sentimental attachment to clothes.
- In the past I have collected carousel horses, angels and elephants.
- I don’t collect anything now.
- My first car was an electric blue Grand Prix, a family hand-me-down.
- I wish I could purr like a cat.
- I cannot roll my R’s.
- I’ll eat just about anything if it’s deep fried.
- I have no musical ability outside of appreciating it in others.
- The only time I recall enjoying singing (and
anyone enjoying me singing) was when my children were babies…and
lullabies were part of our bedtime ritual. - I sang a three-song repetroire, "Let Me Call You Sweetheart", "It’s a Happy Day" and "You are My Sunshine".
- Realizing fully well they were stalling to stay up a few minutes later, I still loved my babies begging me to sing.
- Now, they beg me NOT to sing.
- Or "car dance"…that is SO not cool for their mother to do (hehe).
- I don’t just love drinking coffee for the
taste or caffeine…it’s for the warmth in my hands, its divine aroma,
and an excuse to use fun mugs. - While I wouldn’t turn down marshmallows in hot chocolate, my preference is whipped cream. MOUNDS of it!
- You can smile with your lips, or you can
smile with your lips AND your eyes. The latter is MUCH more beautiful
and engaging and I think it’s easy to tell the difference. - I d.e.t.e.s.t. a victim mentality and blaming others for your circumstances.
- It’s unattractive in children, it’s deplorable in adults.
- The more I read Scripture, the more I want to
read Scripture; the less I read Scripture, the less I want to read
Scripture. What’s up with that? - Sometimes the most sincere prayer I can offer is the same prayer as the father who had a demon-possessed son (full account in Mark 9:14-32).
- I’m pretty much cold all the time.
- I love to fill our children’s Christmas
stockings, but not until this year, did my children notice and comment
that Tad and I don’t have one. - I’m on the prowl for two new Christmas stockings :).
- I used to be a binge bargain shopper, but that abruptly stopped when I moved to Tennessee 4 1/2 years ago.
- For the most part, I HATE shopping…too many choices for EVERYTHING!
- EVERY time my children ask what’s for dinner, the FIRST thought that enters my mind–which I don’t allow myself to respond–is "Chicken sh!t on a shingle".
- About the above: a) My sweeter-than-sugar
mother-in-law, the woman who is basically Jesus with skin on, told me I
could say that on my blog, because b) it’s what my my mother used to
say to us (to be blogged with affection soon). - I’m thankful to have siblings of both genders.
- All the knives in our kitchen desperately need to be sharpened or replaced!
- I won a marathon dance contest when I was in high school.
- I’m very competitive when playing games, but it probably doesn’t come across that way.
- I think (hope?) I’m a good sport when I lose…and when I win.
- I don’t have a favorite flower but several favorites–gerbera daisies, gardenias, tulips, lilies of the valley and zinnias.
- I don’t care for carnations at all.
- I stopped wearing perfume because I wear scented lotions.
- Sometimes, I think it’d be nice to give up scented lotion in order to wear perfume again…for my husband.
- Pretty soon, if you’re a consistent reader, you’ll notice a shift in my blog….
Well, now…that was actually fun to write. Makes me wonder how hard it would be to come up with a second list myself! :).
Good stuff, Robin. I forgot to do one on the old blog, so I am waiting to hit 100 on this one. The posts I managed to track down from the old put me over, but I want to play fair. Plus, I need time to get that stream of consciousness going. I saw a version of this on AFF and decided I would do it that way as well.
I much prefer the 100 to be stream of consciousness rather than dry and humourless, so thank you.
I have long ago done the 100th – but always been a slave to NOT doing things when they are expected, so maybe one day, maybe not…
I have read your first fifty with interest though I am not inspired to create 100 things list about me. I am going to read more about the Lewy Body disease. My father died confused seemingly with Alzheimer’s. His autopsy spoke of Parkinson’s disease with dementia and something about Lewy Bodies.
Good for you figuring out about your job and then moving on.
Oh yes, I say that I am directionally challenged. I always have to think a few moments to distinguish my right from my left. If I drive someplace new, I have a difficult time retracing my steps.
Congratulations, on your 400th post.
200 Interesting things about you? Should get really interesting along about 162
Very cool. You know, I think it’s not so much that there aren’t 100 things to say about yourself, but rather, what are you willing to put out there for anyone to read!! 🙂
Can you keep a secret? I didn’t see it on the list, this is the first time I’ve read anyone’s 100 list. Usually I see it as too overwhelming and just pass it but here I made the first 50 and look forward to the next 50.
Interesting stuff there. I like you. 🙂
Great first 50. I was trying to keep my items short on my 100 list due to the 10 things I love about me I had a paragraph for each one. I thought it flowed, for my thoughts it did, but yours was nice!
Paper is the easiest in my mind, all you need is one paper grocery bag and a space to put it. Once it is full it goes in your garage or in the trunk to go to the recycle place. I keep my glass in a box in the garage, that is the one item that doesn’t fill up as quickly as the rest.
Looking fwd to the next 50! Have a Happy New Year!!
That Murder, Mayhem and a Fine Man was a great book! I loved it!
I used to dream about my teeth falling out and would wake up spitting on my pillow (cause in my dream I was spitting out teeth) and yes I am serious grinder!
Way to go on attacking 100 (but some of us – and we won’t say who – has done 300!)
Loved this.
It’s simply, you.
#42-I used to dream all the time about my contacts being too big to put in my eyes. Sometimes they were as big as plates and I tried and tried to cram them onto my eyes. Frustration! My worst and most recurring dream is trying to find a clean and private bathroom to use. They are always public and open and dirty, sickeningly. Most of the time the toilet is not even hooked up to plumbing. I don’t know what that means, but I have spent many hours looking for a bathroom in a lot of places.
I love that you included #35 and think maybe you would have if you had teachers who loved the subject. (Which was my reason for being a history teacher…and I got out after 3 years for the same reason you left your church care job!) If you ever need any help in historical things (esp. Medieval Britain) I got your back!
Hey Robin. I’m slowly emerging from my laptopless vacation and catching up on my faves. I can’t thank you enough for the kind mentions, both here and elsewhere. You truly exemplify the giving spirit, which is why I so very much enjoy reading your work.
I love how your list flowed. I felt like I was reading snippets of your story. And I could relate because you get “real” in ways that make absolute sense to me and to everyone else who’s commented here. I hope you’ve got more lists like this in you: I can’t wait to read ’em.
Carmi, I wasn’t ready to stop when I did. Thanks for providing the motivation to finally write one of these “lists”…I thoroughly enjoyed it :).
fun fun list! I’ve enjoyed looking around your blog (I’ve seen your name in comments on other blogs, but never stopped on by…)
I have scoliosis too, but no brace here, either.
Blessings,
Karla
Good list, I just did this too and posted it today! I like the one about your watch going out and how now you tell time with you cell – I do the same thing now since my battery died!
Not only can I recognize my children by their smell, I can also differentiate among them by (a) the way the top of each one’s head feels to my cheek, and (b) the feel of each one’s lovely nose. We have tried this.
Robin, I really like this idea of listing 100 “things.” I’d like to do this for myself and make this a project for the girls for homeschool. They can work on their list weekly until they reach 100, no pressure or time limits. I love it! It will be something else for us to write about(like we don’t have enough). One of them will probably love this idea; the other won’t, but she’s the one that really needs the practice. Oh well…:)
I’m with you on #s 12, 19&29, 36 & 36, 60 (at least they’re better than potato chips); you inspired me to update my list a bit and re-open it for comments (http://fondofsnape.com/?p=4)
12 should be 10; 29 should be 20 🙂
The Velveteen Rabbit is my all time favorite childrens story.
This is from a post I wrote about it:
“This book made such an impression on me that I privately began referring to my bedroom as the nursery and sometimes imagined my mom was Nana. Any illness had the romantic potential of becoming a fever. And I knew with the certainty of childhood that all of my toys could become real if only I loved them hard enough.”
I also hate dirty fingernails, but it seems that you just can’t keep little boys fingernails clean. ugh! a constant struggle. 🙂
Dirty toenails also gross me out.
I also hate victim mentality and I have been using my cell phone for time for three years now and still haven’t replaced my watch battery. 🙂
So # 89 just made me make a mess of my keyboard, tea just sputtered out of my nose, nice visual huh ? How we are similar, I also lost my Mom to Breast Cancer when I was young, it is genetic in my family and like you I’m not scared of it, I choose not to live my life in fear. I also resolved to read more books, and so far have held true. Oh and people that play the victim… Give me a break, get a backbone and move on.
How we are not similar… Ballet, LMBO, I have about as much grace as a baby elephant.
Creme Brulee makes me gag. I only have a brother, I detest deep fried food, my relationship with Jesus isn’t as strong as yours but I’m working on it.
How we are alike:
6. I also love to laugh HARD–until tears.
10. Blogging cuts into my reading time.
22. The trinity also blows my mind.
45. I was a nursery director for a small church. The washing with disinfectant was the most tedious part of the job.
82. Reading the Bible.
91. I have a brother and a sister.
AND, I’ve subscribed.
So, may I PLEASE have one of those lovely books?
400 posts! What a milestone. I wish you many more happy and healthy posts! We are similar in personalities. The one that really hit home
is the binge bargain shopper….Thanks, Cindi
Hi Robin! This is a wonderful list – we have lots in common. I have my Chickenpox scar on my right cheekbone. My son (now 17) and my daughter (now 10) both have the VR-style bunnies. DD still hugs her’s in bed nightly, and I have stored DS’s bunny until his kids arrive one lovely day! I love reading and sharing the Bible, no sibs. I gave up perfume some time ago due to our son’s asthma triggers, but he’s outgrown it now so I can spray away and layer with the lotions – such freedom!
amen and amen to #83
I totally use my cell phone to tell time! My watch battery broke last December.
And, I cannot agree more about coffee. It’s a whole experience.
Great contest!
Wow…i like your idea of a 100 list as a stream of consciousness rather than a boring fact-after-fact they usually are!
I too took ballet, but I would pay an arm and a leg to be able to ERASE all that footage. It doesn’t help that my parents have everything taped twice over, so I’d NEVER find all the evidence…
I’m always the first person to start laughing and the last to stop…and if I’m with friends, if I look at someone else who’s laughing…I start up again!!
I also LOVE the texture of creme brulee and tiramisu…and also custard and yoplait’s thick and creamy yogurt mmmm. Cashews are my favorite nut! (even plain they taste better than pecans or walnuts) Deep-fried is a biiig no-no for me…unless it’s donuts, french fries, potato chips, or ice-cream (tempura, that is)
When I read you can smile with your lips and eyes…I couldn’t help but think…tyra! haha
vanillacreme at gmail dot com
I love to laugh until I cry, too. It’s the best feeling.
Taking ballet is not like riding a bike. You cannot return to it 10 years later and still look like a trained dancer! I’ve stopped telling people I ever took dance lessons 🙂
Laugh at me but 5,6,7,9,10,15,17,18,19,20,23,29,33,34,35,48,50,51,53,56,60,63,68,69,70,80,81,89,LOL so true,an 92 I agree with you on all, funny where we find our self after kids.
Marathon Dance? Circa….’79,’80 @ Athens Academy w/ ? I believe I may have competed against you. As stated earlier, props to you for your willingness to lay it on the net for all to see. ? 101-200?
Hey Robin, I’ve got scoliosis too but never wore a brace. DEFINITELY understand how ministry can suck the joy out of life. I agree that the “large” and “little” things in creation scream the glory of God. And belly laughs rule! 🙂 Love your list!
Saw a blurb on Paula Dean’s twitter and here I am reading 100 things more–way too many to agree with (maybe we’re twins separated at birth?)
First and always foremost — I will always be amazed that God has allowed me to have HIM be LORD of my life!
Coffee–necessity and always a pleasure.
Dreams–(you like ellipses, I like dashes (lol) I’ve dreamed all those things, my toothless dream has now turned into how I would clean each tooth were they still in my head–maybe I should have been a dental hygienist? They are all still in my head, BTW 🙂
Reading Scripture–never have I read such a profound statement like yours–love my NASB Life Application Bible but don’t read it enough.
No perfume–Sweet Pea Body Spray from Bath & Body Works when I remember. Same for soap, but remember oftener! (lol)
Have to get ready for church–thanks for being such a GREAT read!!
Thank you for your kind words, familiarity and taking time to let me know how you dropped in on my blogging spot. I DO hope you'll come again…and soon, I'll find out more about YOU! 🙂
I didn’t have time to say before church but wanted to add on the toe nail one–I’m not all that thrilled w/clean one’s either :O I try not to look at people’s feet in the summer (lol) Of course, here in NC it’s the summer for a loooooooong time!
I can hardly wait to have time to read more of your posts! I’ve only read a couple but I especially loved the “former child” one–Way too funny!! Died laughing–thanks for that. Back to work for me.
Love this list…we have many in common!
Hi there! I’m brand new here… just stumbled over from incourage. I also have some things in common — like using my cellphone to tell time instead of wearing a watch now because my watch doesn’t work anymore, and I don’t need a new one because, well, I can use my cell phone to tell time. 🙂 Oh, and I’ve had that dream where my contact is WAAAY too big for my eye — like as big as my face. Funny that I still remember it — it totally freaked me out. Anyway — love your blog. Thanks for your words.
Hi Robin! It was so nice to meet you via Sandy’s blog, and now it’s really nice to get to know you a little more via Nester’s linky party. I’m really looking forward to meeting you at Blissdom.
So am I like you at all? Well, aside from having three teenagers, I’ll list a couple of things:
I often pray, “Help Thou my unbelief!” (All the scripture I memorized as a child was KJV, so I always include the “Thou.”)
I used to sing “A, You’re Adorable” to my children.
What do you think?
too much alike to list it all here. I have tried to make a 100 list and I find it hard. I need to try it again. Loved reading yours.
You are funny. I think 89 is hillarious. I also started recycling a few years ago and I totally relate with you about how it causes you to see stewardship in a different light. I also LOVE the velveteen rabbit and the gift of the magi. Those were my two favorite stories growing up… I used to only be able to read the gift of the magi occasionally, well actually both of them occasionally, because they made me so sad and happy at the same time. Anyway… my point is that we have a lot in common. I realy enjoyed your list. 🙂
I’m an avid mambo dancer and spotting makes a world of difference. Yet, you’d think I’d have it down this 5th year of me being a salsera Smh Hopeless. Lol
